In a nutshell, Early Intervention helps guide, train, and equip parents and caregivers on ways they can help their child grow, learn, and participate in everyday activities. EI works with the family as a partner, providing services for infants and toddlers under the age of three who have a developmental delay.

While EI does not diagnose the child, there are some medical diagnoses that can delay normal development or there could be other reasons preventing the child from meeting developmental milestones. This is when it is important to connect with EI services, as EARLY as possible.

Early Intervention is Important because ...

Your baby’s brain is making most if its connections in the first three years of life. These connections are the foundation for learning, behavior, and health.

The earlier developmental delays are detected and intervention begins, the greater the chance your child has of achieving his or her best potential.

Acting early gives your child a chance to receive the appropriate therapy, giving him or her the best chance for a good outcome in the future.

Children eligible for Early Intervention ...

Children must be under three years old and either have a diagnosed physical or mental condition that could cause a developmental delay or show signs of a developmental delay in one or more of the following areas:

  • Learning or Brain (Cognitive) development
  • Physical development, including vision and hearing
  • Language or Communication development
  • Social/Emotional development
  • Self-care Skills (Adaptive) development

Eligibility is determined after your family is assigned a service coordinator and they complete an evaluation with your child, which can be done at home or at daycare, or another appropriate setting.
